Refugee's camp
Although refugee’s camp may
sound like a perfect solution to help the population in situations like the
conflict in Darfur, as a citizen, maintaining cultural values and norms is
unfortunately not possible. In fact, since they are condemned to live in the
camps for an undetermined period of time, they are unable to practice their culture
and to transmit it to the next generation. (Ondiak, N., & Ismail, O., 2009,
p. 27) Since there ways of living and providing food requires elements such as
land and cattle they are no longer able to produce food or live normally.
In addition, men for nine to ninety years old were taken away from their home which made their patriarchal society unstructured. Indeed, a notable break of the structure was seen at the beginning of the conflict since men were originally the ones responsible for it. (Ondiak, N., & Ismail, O., 2009, p. 27) Women now need to play the role of the financial support and be a leader for the family.
Since the conflict is ongoing since 2003, a generation of children don’t even know what it is like to live as their parents did. (Buchanan- Smith, M., & Jaspars, S., 2007, p. 59) They never experienced the patriarchal society they originally come from and they never got the chance to produce food as their ancestors did. Also, the generation of elderly is suffering from emotional problems as they perfectly remember what life used to be like before the conflict. (Ondiak, N., & Ismail, O., 2009, par. 4)
