Sudan's Population
It is important to understand who exactly the Darfur conflict is affecting, regarding religious beliefs, languages and dialects and tribes:
70% of Sudanese are Islamic, while only 10% are Christian. Over half the population speaks Arabic, and 49% speak other African dialects.
In Darfur alone there are over 100 African and Arab tribes. Because the Darfur region is most prominent in agricultural and farming activities, the majority of Darfuris are either farmers or pastoralist (Embassy of the Republic of Sudan, n.d., par. 13).
The most powerful African tribes in the Darfur area are the Fur, the Zaghawa, and the Massalit. The largest tribe of the three, however, is the Fur, whose members are mostly farmers.
There are also many Arab tribes in Darfur, but the most important one is the Rizeighat. This tribe occupies mostly the southern Darfur region and live off farming and cattle rearing (Embassy of the Republic of Sudan, n.d., par. 14).
