The Impact of Colonialism
The tensions amongst the Northern and Southern tribes of Sudan can be traced back to the slave market where the Arabs of the North committed raids to sell the Black’s from the South. The tribes also had been fighting over ethnic differences and resources for many years. When the 1886 Congress of Berlin arrived, the British and Egyptians united the North and the South and ruled over this colony. The British had most authority over this region, but they did not have the time to manage all of their colonies so they applied the divide and rule policy. This policy had the effect creating even more disparity in the distribution of wealth and resources amongst the two regions. (Heleta, 2008, par.2-5)
The Darfur region joined the rest of the colony in 1916. It is crucial to understand that Darfur was an independent region for many years (Kane, 2005, p.322) and were forced by the colonialism empires to enter a colony which counts little over 572 tribes nowadays that all share very different values and opinions (Olwak, 1973, par.2) and that already had conflicts and wealth distribution problems. Although the climate was very far from being peaceful amongst the regions, the British and Egyptian authority assured a control over the tensions between the regions. In fact, the Egyptians had authority over the North and the British over the South. This management type assured less interactions and possible conflicts amongst the regions.
Unfortunately, once Sudan obtained their independence January 1st 1956, their situation went on a down fall. (Olwak, 1973, par.1-3) The Constitution created did not precise the official religion and did not establish a clear federal structure. (Enough Project, 2015, par.3) The lack of a proper Constitution created many issues as the two regions need each other for their economy but also hate each other because of the different ethnicities and events of the past.
