Darfur Crisis
It began in 2003 following the uprising of two rebel groups. Scholars do not agree upon one specific cause for it is a mix of many elements such as tribal conflicts, ‘’counterinsurgency campaign gone awry’’ and the will to eliminate the African tribes to the benefit of the Arabs on through genocide that caused this tragic event. (Kane, 2005, p.323) It was also caused by the failed attempt to include de Darfur region in the treaty and many other reasons that have been explained previously.
The conflict has caught the international community’s attention as the deaths in the Darfur region reach incredible numbers and are even considered genocide in some cases. In 2006, there was an attempt to cease the conflict with the Darfur Peace Agreement but this attempt failed because not all the tribes decided to sign the treaty. (Darfur dream team, 2015, par.4) A few years later, in 2009, the President Omar-al Bashir is found guilty of Crime against humanity because of his actions against the Darfur tribes. (Darfur dream team, 2015, par.7) With the help of neutral negotiators a new treaty was signed in 2011. The treaty is called the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD) and was signed by most of the rebel groups. (Darfur dream team, 2015, par.11) Unfortunately this will not cease the hostilities towards the two groups that are still taking place today. (Darfur dream team, 2015, par.12)
