Omar al-Bashir
Born on January 7th 1944, Omar Hassan Ahmad al-Bashir is one of the most important and controversial aspects in the Darfur genocide. He is blamed for most of Sudan’s issues in local conflict and global relations, since he is the President of Sudan, and has been since 1993 (Britannica, 2014, par. 1).
Being a military officer, Omar al-Bashir led a coup d’état against the Sudanese government in 1989, after many years of being head of the Sudanese army’s campaign against the rebels. After the revolt of 1989, he became chairman of the Revolutionary Command Council for National Salvation (RCCNS). The RCCNS quickly took control over Sudan by dissolving the parliament, eliminating all political parties and by censuring the media. These were Bashir’s first steps to Islamize Sudan, before he officialised the Islam Law in 1991 (Britannica, 2014, par. 3).
In October of 1993, the RCCNS was dissociated, therefore installing Omar al-Bashir as President of Sudan. Later, in 1996, he was officially elected President by a majority vote (Britannica, 2014, par. 4).
Since his election in 1996, Bashir has been responsible for all political actions regarding the Darfur crisis that will be mentioned lower on this page. He has also been elected twice more, in 2000 and in 2010 (Britannica, 2014, par. 8).
